just a slight disagreement with something in one of the reviews
I am in huge agreement that the vents era is underrated and I find it highly interesting. In fact, I'm doing a project with a friend where we are listening
...
to every show from every year the vince era, finding all the interesting moments, and rating the good the bad the ugly. It's fun. I found a lot of great things. But I think someone also said that their songwriting was lacking during this period. I disagree! Lazy River Road, Corinna, and especially so many roads and days between. Those are some of my most favorite dad songs and I believe all the lyrics are Hunter lyrics, not sure about Corrinna... also, I dig a good long way to go home, man that song got the hugest Applause whenever they played it live. Really the only not so great songs from that era are Samba in the rain and wave to the wind. Although the first time they played those new songs, wave to the wind, that song has a really bad ass Jam section in it, and Jerry crush is it on the first few times they play it. Also Samba in the rain with maybe good the first time they played it when Jerry knew what key it was in it would actually solo decently over it. Shoot, I actually dig easy answers all there that song got a lot better in the post Jerry era of the Dead. 90s dead is way under right and I'm going to write a book about it

My first show
I just wanted to add a couple of things to this post. While the Grateful Dead were grossing millions by 1990 in the States, they were a hidden myth in
...
Europe for someone turned 20 years old. No recent European tours. There were certainly no top 40 hits or radio play. (Hawkwind were about the only British psychedlic rock band still going at the time!) So I had no pre-conceptions going to the show. If Jerry had climbed onto the bus I took from Jacksonhole, I would have been none the wiser. Instead, a Dead Head got on; he let me listen to some tapes starting with Skeletons from the Closet. So at least I'd heard Truckin'! At the show, the music didn't blow my mind but now it does. Wow! It's surprising how good this is! The songs are poignant, well chosen to both celebrate and mourn the life of a brother. Crazy Fingers is so bang on for Brent. PITB is a good vibe. Black Peter is an interesting choice, honest?...Bobby lets out some frustration in Truckin'... People say they should have taken a break after Brent passed away (RIP) but music was the way the band expressed themselves. They probably didn't want to sit around, feeling blue, they needed to get all that emotion out. At the show, it was the warm atmosphere I remember the most, my concert neighbours almost holding my hand. A group of us had been ripped off outside the stadium so a Deadhead friend had given me her ticket. It was The Golden Ticket, priceless. Thank you!

Yo Vinnie
I'll give this show 5 stars for historical value. The Vince era is interesting and in my opinion, underrated. Sadly, Jerry was declining during that
...
time, and their songwriting had declined, too. But instrumentally, they had some outstanding nights, beter than ever. When they got Vince, they made the conscious decision to jump all the way into synth, leaving behind Keith's piano and Brent's Hammond organ. I think it was a great choice. Credit should also go to the Dead's midi programmer, who got the sounds for both Vince and Jerry. I liked Vince's playing a lot. It is also really sad how his life ended. RIP Vinnie.
I also remember when Vince finally emerged toward the end of Space, Garcia turned to him (I suppose) to kinda show him the ropes of 'letting go' in such
...
a setting and it seemed VERY MUCH like the Mothership trying to communicate with the Earthlings in Close Encounters;^)

Something like a bird...
Both the Bird song and PITB are excellent ! It seems so few people know about these shows. This is easily the best recording I've heard of this one.
...
Jerry was on fire ! See what could happen when that actually got together and practiced ?

surprise
We were a bit surprised that the band re-grouped so quickly following the sudden and tragic loss of Brent. I know that many of the older heads knocked
...
him around quite a bit, but I for one loved his playing and felt that his singing was so deeply heartfelt that it was impossible not to entrain to the energy. All that aside, we sat in my apartment in Illinois, 40 miles due west of Chicago, on a weeknight, Tuesday or Thursday, doing the typical cards or chess or what have you. In comes Jodi, bustin' through the unlocked door (in those days, everyone just walked in. If there was a knock at the door, we were puttin' shit up, saying "hold on a minute!"). Jodi-"The Boys are playing tomorrow, something like 7 or 8 hours away, in Ohio!" Me-"Your kidding me! Oh well, I have to work." Shaun-"(Bleep)work dude! We can take my car, just throw me some gas money!" Jodi-"Yeah bro! Just call in sick or something!" Me-"Okay. Lemme grab some stuff!"... My God, how I miss those days! The scene was frenetic, insane, claustrophobic, in a nutshell, a freakin' MADHOUSE! The place held about 20,000, I bet there were closer to 40,000 people there that first day. Lots left or stayed at the campgrounds the next day due to the next to impossible to acquire tickets. Yours truly hopped out of the car while we were creeping along in line to get into the lot, walked past each car asking if they had any extras. Along about the tenth car, an older (to me at the time, 40ish) couple had one for each night, their son had chosen to stay home, they could not persuade him to come to mom-n-dads concert for fogies. They sold me two tix for $50. None of us knew yet that those tickets were freakin' GOLD! One could have EASILY got $100 per, or a quarter of DANK bud, even a page if you tried (and I mean fffaaammmiiillllyyyy L!) When i saw those folks first night, it was nothing but huge hugs, fatty city, and pure love. These oldsters were as high as anybody and it was ALL love, man. The family treats were clean and fresh and it all came together in a teary tribute to our beloved Brent! Vince did an admirable job for the first time, and the energy was as high as it gets that night. The band, ESPECIALLY Jer, was on FIRE! It felt to me that they were at the same time filling the void, paying tribute, and grieving at the same time. The band LEFT THEIR HEARTS ON THE STAGE THAT NIGHT! This is easily one my favorite post- Brent run, these two shows. Don't overlook these two nights any longer. Sound is a bit uneven, but nothing a decent EQ can't remedy. Life, Love, and Longevity!
